About us

The Graduate Program in Biotechnology and Innovation in Health presents a coordinated structure for the development of innovative biotech products in the health area, propitiating the teachers and researchers’ formation trained to meet the new technological demands of our country. Following what is recommended by the policy of biotechnology development in Brazil, which seeks to promote consistent and long-term public policies to make it possible for the exploitation of the opportunities and potential of Brazil in the field of biotechnology, the courses of Academic Master’s and Doctor’s degree in biotechnology and Innovation in Health offer proposals for scientific and formative quality that present themselves as an approximation of the academic knowledge with the productive sector in the biotechnology area in Brazil, strategic need for the country’s future. The courses of Academic Master’s and Doctor’s programs were approved by CAPES in May 2012, both with grade 4. The program had its beginning with notice and selective process classifying in September 2012 the doctor’ and master’s degree candidates.

Structure

The Biotechnology and Innovation in Health Program presents a coordinated structure for the development of innovative biotech products in the health area, showing a balance between the number of teachers that sustain the inter-related research lines, the distribution of developed projects and participation in the offered subjects.

Goals

The program objectives of biotechnology and Innovation in Health are: prepare the students to research, teaching and scientific-technological activity of innovation with emphasis on interdisciplinarity represented in order to integrate the technological areas with those of health. The future trained and qualified professionals to operate in the professional market, will mainly operate in research centers, higher education institutions, in the industrial sector, in Sistema Único de Saúde. This proposal is based on the need to supply a priority area of supplying professionals facing the development of biotechnological products. In addition, due to the importance of the specialized training of graduate student in biotechnology, coming from differentiated and multidisciplinary characteristic of the group of teachers who compose the Program, stimulate the creation and transfer of technology, in a continuous manner, taking as its focus the incorporation of new products by the productive sector. In this context, the university occupies its space as an element in the forefront of technological innovation, with insertion in the regional and national economies, by the ability to develop education and transfer the results of research of high scientific and technological standard. It should be noted, therefore, that the proposal for this program is to strengthen the importance of the development of integrated research for the human resources training in the biotechnology area. The professional profile to be formed are masters and doctors with critical spirit and ethical and scientific reflection that contribute not only to the knowledge (that is linear and disciplinary), but also to innovation (that is emerging and transdisciplinary).

Professionals from the areas of Biotechnology, Biomedicine, Biology, Pharmacy, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Dentistry, Chemistry and related areas, subject to the approval of the collegiate body of the program.

Fields of Research

The concentration area of Biotechnology and Innovation in Health is characterized by conducting studies and research aimed at answering the needs of related areas located in the university/industry/ health interface, complying with the country’s priority demands in the biotechnology area. This interface is based on the current concept of convergent science , characterized by the junction of several strands of knowledge that build their cognitive universe and underpin their fundamental bases in the interdisciplinarity of knowledge important for the applicability of results. In this context, the concentration area of Biotechnology and Innovation in Health reflects the growing need of future professionals to develop new technologies using knowledge acquired in traditional areas such as biochemistry, pharmacology, molecular biology, physical-chemical, dentistry, phytotherapy and bioinformatics, in the direction of obtaining methods and innovative biotech products and in the characterization of its mechanisms of action. The study of biocompatibility, biomechanics, biochemistry and pre-clinical and clinical aspects of bioactive inputs will converge to support the choice of the biotechnology area. The research projects represented by this concentration area have as objectives the synthesis, isolation and the development of bioactive inputs, the investigation of their properties, interactions with the tissues and organic environments, the studies of modulation of gene expression in genomic, proteomic, epigenetic approaches and pre-clinical and clinical assessment of the same, and also the validation and certification of experimental research protocols, which are fundamental to support the development of new bioactive inputs.

Research Topics
Research Topic 1: Bioactive Inputs and Nanotechnology in Health

This research line has as objectives: Isolate bioactive materials of natural origin, derived from plants and resinous substance secreted by animals (ex. propolis), employing different extraction techniques; identify and quantify the isolated active principles by means of gas chromatography with the use of markers and mass spectrometry; investigate and develop synthetic methodologies for obtaining new bioactive compounds through organic and inorganic synthesis; use these methodologies of synthesis to improve the physicochemical properties of molecules with interest of biological applications; apply nanotechnology to the development of devices and synthesis of functional materials, through the matter control at the nanometer scale, so that the resulting systems present new phenomena and potential properties in the development of Pharmaceutical formulations and use in dentistry, such properties are dependent on the particles size that constitute the same; to establish a correlation among the properties presented by each of the classes of produced biomaterials and their applicability; to evaluate the physicochemical biomaterials properties by means of studies involving spectroscopic , morphological, diffraction techniques, among others.

Research Topic 2: Molecular and Cellular Biology Applied to Health

This line seeks to address the basic concepts of cellular, and molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, bioinformatics, mechanisms of pathogenicity, the use of molecular markers in diagnostics and studies with adult stem cells, aiming to upgrade the student on themes of technological application that use biological systems, living organisms, or derivatives thereof, to produce products and processes. The studies linked to this research line will emphasize the strategic issues in current Biotechnology policy such, as recombinant DNA technology for obtaining therapeutic molecules in heterologous expression systems; updates on application of biotechnological processes for industrial production, nanobiotechnology, new systems of “drug-delivery”, tissue engineering , biomaterials interaction in cell and tissue culture, genomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, expanding and updating the knowledge about production and applicability of biotechnology in the health area. The research in this line have as a guideline the integration of the scientific production and the applicability in the development of products and processes arising out of the same, responding to the country’s needs in the integration of obtaining new targets and to use for diagnosis and treatment in the health area, differential obtained by biotechnology.

Research Topic 3: Pre-clinical and Clinical Studies of Biotechnological Products

This research line aims to evaluate pre-clinical and clinical, bioactive inputs, in their different phases. The studies regarding this line of research include studies of biological, pharmacological, physiological, biochemical, biophysical and dental processes as well as its multidisciplinary interaction contributing to the evaluation and development of innovative therapeutic products and processes in the health technology area, their safety and efficacy, with obedience to the ethical standards. Implementation of intervention studies organized in preclinical and clinical assays with the goal of generating knowledge and proving e the performance of biotechnological products in their clinical application. It also aims at the assessment of research protocols already established, as well as the evaluation of new protocols.
