### About us

The Graduate Program in Mathematical Education -Academic Master and Doctorate – is characterized by the studies and research development on the role of mathematics in education, emphasizing the epistemological, cognitive, didactic and cultural-historical points of view. The program research activities are aimed at the knowledge production that could contribute to the educational and scientific knowledge development, considering the context and the historical, political and social dimensions, as well as the technologies available. The first classes of Academic Master and Doctorate had their activities initiated in 2008 and the number of graduates until 2017 were: 212 masters and 121 PhDs. The Doctorate of this Program has national scope, involving students from all regions of the country.

Theses concluded by 2017 – regions of the graduates’ origin: North (914), Northeast (20), Midwest (8), Southeast (75) and South (1).

### Target Audience

Professors who teach mathematics at all levels of education and educators, teaching degree or bachelor degree in related areas, provided that they are approved by the Program Commission Coordination.

### Fields of research

The area of Mathematics Education concentration researches expertise, knowledge and teaching practices, analyzing, critically, pedagogical and formative processes. It relates scientific, technological, educational and school knowledge concerning mathematics, in order to produce research, methodological possibilities and educational products intended for the teaching and learning of concepts and procedures in this area of knowledge, relating to different stages of Basic Education and Higher Education, promoting the social inclusion of all students. It aims, therefore, to widen and deepen the knowledge base of graduate students for research and for the mathematics teaching.

##### Research Topics

**Mathematics Teaching and Learning and its innovations**: This line is characterized by the investigation of issues concerning the teaching and learning processes of mathematical content at different education levels. In investigations, the contemporary trends of Mathematics Education, digital technologies and theoretical and methodological frameworks are considered, with the aim of contributing to the improvement of the mathematics teaching quality.

**Professors’ qualification, Curriculum and History**: This line aims at studying the teachers’ qualification processes who teach mathematics, including the curricula of these processes, in close relationship with the contexts in which they occur, taking into account contemporary trends of teachers’ training both in the in-class as the distance modality, and their implications in the mathematics education area. The use of new technologies is one of the fundamental aspects for studies on the formative processes. It also aims to produce knowledge about the school mathematics history in Brazil and its articulation with the teachers’ training. This production is guided by several fundamental questions such as: Why do we teach what we teach in mathematics? Why is certain mathematical knowledge valued for teaching at the expense of others? In addition, this line promotes interdisciplinary and Intercultural studies, examining the historical evolution of mathematical ideas and philosophy, as well as sociocultural and environmental factors influencing the Mathematics Education.

**Inclusive Mathematics Education and their technologies**: The driving force of this research line is the search for ways to promote an educational culture that respects the learners’ diversity present in the school context. The investigations focus on theoretical, methodological, educational and cognitive issues that offer support for mathematical practices of learners with special educational needs. The consciousness of an inclusive society has conducted to a give and take scenario studies . On the one hand, it is aimed to contribute to the structuring of a didactics for Mathematics teaching that fosters a deep understanding of the learning processes; on the other hand, it is sought to provide the Mathematics teachers, with didactic-pedagogical tools to embrace, in their classrooms, all students.
